CAREERS IN
ELECTRICAL TRADES

What is the union?

Becoming a union electrician in New York State is a smart, rewarding career choice - offering hands-on training, great wages, and strong job security. At Martin Electric, we're proud to support this journey every step of the way.

Apprenticeship Program Pre-Qualifications

Before you can enter an electrical apprenticeship, you must meet the following basic requirements:

  • Minimum Age: 18 years old (you can apply at 17, but must be 18 to start).
  • High School Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Math Requirement: One year of high school algebra (must show a transcript or equivalent qualification).
  • Aptitude Test: Achieve a qualifying score on an electrical aptitude test (covers math and reading comprehension).
  • Drug Free: Must pass a pre-employment drug screen to be accepted into the program.

Steps to Getting Into the Apprenticeship

At Martin Electric, we:

  • Application – Fill out and submit your application with all required documents (age proof, transcripts, etc.).
  • Aptitude Test – Take the electrical aptitude test once your application is accepted.
  • Interview – If you pass the test, you’ll be invited to interview with the apprenticeship committee.

Once you successfully complete these steps and are selected, you’ll begin the apprenticeship - combining paid on-the-job training with classroom instruction to become a skilled electrician.

Not in the Apprenticeship Yet? Start in Our Warehouse

If you’re planning to apply for the electrical apprenticeship but aren’t in the program yet, a Warehouse Associate position at Martin Electric is a great way to get started. Working in our warehouse gives you hands-on exposure to the tools, materials, and equipment used on real job sites every day. This role allows you to gain experience and stay engaged in the trade while you work through the apprenticeship application process.
